"The Sixth Extinction" (English: "The Sixth Extinction") and "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor fati" (English: "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati") are the first two episodes of the seventh season of the series "The X–Files". The first episode premiered on November 7, the second on November 14, 1999 on FOX.
Episodes "The Sixth Extinction" reveal new aspects of the main "mythology" of the series and complete the story begun in the last episode of the sixth season, which tells about Mulder's acute reaction to alien artifacts.
During the preparation of the scripts for these three episodes, Chris Carter was fascinated by the theory suggesting the involvement of aliens in the ancient extinction of life on Earth. The plot of the second episode of the seventh season was also significantly influenced by the novel "The Last Temptation of Christ" by Nikos Kazantzakis.
Episode 01
FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner and former CIA agent Michael Krichgo are trying to figure out what happened to Mulder, who is on compulsory treatment due to unnatural brain activity. But they don't know that Diana Foley is a double agent. At the same time, Scully explores ancient artifacts in Africa.
Episode 02
Scully returns from Africa and finds out that Mulder has fallen into a coma. He soon disappears from the hospital, and Skinner and Krichgo join Scully in his search. In a dream, a Smoker offers Mulder to start life with a clean slate. Mulder comes to his senses and realizes that his duty is to prevent alien colonization.
Phenomena in artwork: Local anomalies
Unusual phenomena periodically occur in the vicinity of the site of the discovery of a submerged alien spacecraft off the coast of Africa:
- Scully's tent and the surrounding area are filled with a swarm of locusts in a short period of time;
- water in the sea leaves burns on the diver's body;
- the water in the sea takes on a blood-red hue;
- the dead fish and the dead man suddenly come to life.
Phenomena in artwork: Extrasensory perception
The alien virus in Mulder's blood is activated when he looks at the symbols depicted on the wreckage of the alien spaceship. After that, the activity of the temporal lobes of the brain increases, and he begins to hear the thoughts of people around him and predict the near future (by a few tenths of a second).
Phenomena in artwork: Spirits
Being off the coast of Africa, Scully sees several times and once even communicates with a thin black man. Every time after its appearance, something strange happens (for example, the water in the sea turns red). Locals suggest that this is the spirit of an African deity.
In the USA, Scully is visited by the spirit of an Indian shaman, who supports her and helps restore inner balance.
The Spirit of an African God
Phenomena in artwork: Zombies
A man hacked to death with a machete comes to life and attacks his killer. Presumably, the reason for its revival is the impact of an alien spacecraft located nearby.
The Living Dead
Phenomena in artwork: UFO
The UFOs shown in the episode only exist in Agent Mulder's visions. Two of them are alien warships attacking Earth during an alien invasion. Another ship is being built out of sand by Mulder and the boy from his visions. All spaceships (including those built of sand) look similar to the submerged ship found off the coast of Africa in the final episode of the sixth season.
