A dead humpback whale washed ashore has inflated like a balloon and can explode, scattering blood and guts.

A young female, nicknamed "Spike" by scientists, was found on Malcolm Island in British Columbia, Canada. Rescuers cannot say exactly how she died, and she has no signs of external damage.

There is a risk that a whale about 10 meters in size may explode due to the accumulation of gases inside the animal during decomposition.

In the past, several beached whales have exploded, and in some cases, real explosives have been used to clear beaches.
