Matt Foy rowed on his kayak around the Bay Whalers, when they noticed a stream of bubbles rising from the seabed. He and his colleague lowered the camera under the surface of the water and found a rapid stream of air bubbles escaping from the rocks. Mr. Foy reported that the sea temperature has increased, and the water around the bubbles seemed to be sulfuric.
"We looked at each other, and we had no idea what it was... this hundred-meter line of warm bubbles rising from the seabed", he said.
Expert georisk Dr. William Hugh from the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) said that the bubble is "a magical and very beautiful."
"What we see here is of extraordinary scientific value, this is a very interesting place for tourists who want to see the effects of the earthquake," says Hugh.
The scientist believes that the bubble is carbon dioxide gas that is freed from rocks, cracked during a severe earthquake on 14 November.
"It is to be saved, it is necessary to take care of. While this phenomenon exists, it can be valuable to the Kaikoura", — said Hugh.
