This phenomenon was first described in 1918 by a German scientist.
A rare natural phenomenon was noticed in the Leningrad region, namely-in the Vsevolozhsky district. About the phenomenon called "ice hair" told the author and host of the blog "Every creature in a pair" Pavel Glazkov in his VK community.
"The native nature never ceases to delight me! On Sunday, we walked with the children in the forest, in our Vsevolozhsky district. My attention was caught by an unusual whiteness on the fallen branches: either cobwebs, or snow. It turned out that we were lucky enough to observe a rare and fleeting natural phenomenon," the biologist wrote.
Pavel Glazkov accidentally found a phenomenon discovered by a German scientist in 1918. It has many names: "ice wool", "shaggy ice", "snow hair" and so on.
"Shaggy ice" is specifically formed ice. For its appearance, you need a temperature below zero and very high humidity. At the heart of the phenomenon is a type of fungus exidiopsis effusa, which appears on decomposed wood.
"The moisture that is in the wood freezes at the surface. The ice comes to the surface through the thin pores of the wood. Tiny ice "bumps" are formed. It grows and turns into a "thread", - Pavel Glazkov explained.
Note that the unique natural phenomenon can be observed exclusively in the Northern Hemisphere between the 45 and 60 parallels.
