"How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" (English: "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas") is the sixth episode of the sixth season of the X-Files series. The episode belongs to the "monster of the week" type and is not related to the main "mythology" of the series.
Christmas Eve. Telling an old story about unhappy lovers who made a pact to be together forever and committed suicide, Mulder leads Scully to a dark mansion, which is supposedly inhabited by a couple of ghosts. They go inside and the front door slams shut behind them, trapping them. Mulder is convinced that this is the result of the actions of ghosts who live in the house.
Scully, skeptical as always, explains to Mulder that people need to believe in life after death because it calms their fear of the unknown. But when the door, which had slammed before, suddenly opens, Mulder again attributes this to the actions of ghosts. Scully admits that she was scared, but believes that this is an irrational fear, and the reasons for what is happening are quite rational. She assumes that someone lives in the house. After passing through the doors, the partners find themselves in the library.
After a series of strange events, they separate, and each gets into their own version of the room. Here Mulder meets the spirit of Maurice, who advises him to kill Scully. The same one in her parallel library meets the ghost of Lida, who convinces her to shoot Mulder.
When the agents meet again, they follow the insidious plan of the ghosts and shoot each other. The wounded heroes find themselves lying on the stairs, breathing heavily, and suddenly realize that it was just a trick, a deception of consciousness played with them by ghosts.
Phenomena in artwork: Ghost
The ghosts of lovers who once committed suicide in order to celebrate every Christmas together until the end of time appear on Christmas Eve and try to drive to suicide everyone who is in their house at that moment.
Ghosts look like ordinary people, who for some reason have aged significantly since their death. They are tangible, react to touch and interact with objects of the material world. Their bodies show gaping through wounds left by the shots that caused their death. Up to a certain point, they cover these wounds with clothes, as if they are embarrassed by them.
Ghosts cause realistic visions in their victims, in which they pretend to be other people, change the situation at home, light a fire in the fireplace, etc., up to the feeling of fatal wounds.
Phenomena in artwork: Poltergeist
Poltergeist phenomena are caused by ghosts appearing in an abandoned house on the night before Christmas. They open and close doors, move books, light and extinguish lights, make a fire in the fireplace, etc.
Phenomena in artwork: Anomalous zone
An abandoned house can be considered an anomalous zone, in which three double murders have occurred over the past 80 years. According to Mulder, all couples who have ever lived here were waiting for a tragic end.
The ghosts of lovers who committed suicide in the hope of spending every Christmas together until the end of time appear in the house every Christmas Eve. They are trying to drive the people in the house crazy and make them kill each other. After another tragedy, the house was considered cursed and now no one lives in it.
Ghosts cause people to be confused, as a result of which it seems to them that they cannot leave the room: either the same room turns out to be behind the door, or a brick wall. Also, poltergeist phenomena are observed in the house: the light lights up and goes out, the fireplace spontaneously lights up, etc.
