In October 1871 (or 1872), D. Mackenzie of Balnane reportedly saw an object that looked like a log or an overturned boat, "writhing and churning the water", which at first moved slowly and then disappeared at a higher speed.
The report was not published until 1934, when Mackenzie sent his story in a letter To Rupert Gould shortly after public interest in the monster increased.
