Initial data
Evidence of the observation of an unusual phenomenon on July 13, 1989 in the Bermuda area.
The place of observation is the water area of the Atlantic Ocean in the area of the so-called Bermuda Triangle.
The observation time is midnight from July 13 to July 14, 1989 (local time).
The witness is Colonel SA, Deputy. Editor-in-chief of the magazine "Combat Comrade" - publishing house
"Red Star" Menyailo Sergey Vladimirovich, born in 1955.
In July 1989, as a correspondent for the Soviet Military Review magazine, the witness participated in the official friendly visit of a detachment of warships of the USSR Northern Fleet to the US Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia (this base is the largest on the east coast of the United States and has never been visited by Soviet ships before). The witness was part of the crew of the destroyer Excellent.
On the night of July 14, the destroyer as part of the detachment followed the coast of the United States in the area of the so-called Bermuda Triangle (740 miles from the coast, 200 miles from. Bermuda). The witness went out to smoke aft, where about 50 people gathered at that time - sailors and officers off duty, as well as a resting shift. Everyone admired the beautiful view of the night ocean and sky.
The sky was dark, and large stars shone brightly on it. There was no moon. The weather was good, there were isolated, rare smoky clouds in the sky.
Exactly at midnight from 13 to 14 July (17.00 13.07.89 Moscow time) many people noticed a bright "star" flashing right at the zenith. It flared up quickly. Everyone's attention was attracted by the fact that the "asterisk" was rapidly becoming brighter and growing in size.
In 3-4 minutes, it reached the size of the lunar disk. The color of the resulting bright spot of light was yellowish, like that of the moon. There was a dark spot in the central part of the spot. The shape of both was clear and correct.
At the moment of the formation of a large light spot, the radio telephone contact of the destroyer commander with the flagship, the Marshal Ustinov missile cruiser, was interrupted.
Then, for 20 minutes, the spot moved directly above the destroyer at a very high altitude, above the clouds and did not change its size. Its movement was clearly visible relative to the bright stars in the dark sky.
After 20 minutes, it began to dissipate, increasing in size, losing brightness. The dark spot in its center became transparent. After 3-4 minutes, everything disappeared. At that moment, communication with the flagship was restored.
The witness observed such a phenomenon for the first time. Both he and the crew thought it was a UFO. The old-timers said that during their trips across the Atlantic in these latitudes, they had to see similar and other unusual phenomena more than once.
Hypotheses
Booster, the rocket and tracks

For UFOs often take stages of rockets, parts of space ships burning in the atmosphere, the launches of various missile technology for military purposes, etc., and traces from them. They attract attention mostly in the dark, but in the day time have a greater aura of mystery.
Formation of the track of the launch vehicle occurs in the tropopause (the layer between the troposphere and stratosphere), which sharply reduced the vertical temperature gradient. The emergence of the so-called "jellyfish" influenced by water vapor, which are subject to enhanced condensation.
