The local sheriff was literally inundated with reports of meetings with a mysterious creature. Truesdale had long known that reports of strange lights, ghosts, encounters with a bear, or even two in the local swamps were not uncommon. But nothing like the events of the summer of 1988 has ever happened here.

According to the descriptions made by people who have seen this monster, its height exceeds two meters, its skin is green and scaly, on its hands and feet there are three fingers with black claws about ten centimeters long. A kind of round pads on his palms allow him to climb walls. Big eyes glow red in the dark. The creature has a phenomenal power that allows it to cause damage to car bodies.

A strange green monster attacked pets, damaged parked cars. When teenagers Rodney Rolfe and Shane Stokes and their girlfriends drove past the swamp in a car, a lizard man ran right in front of them. In broad daylight, at 12:30, the couple Edward and Michelle Bryan, returning from a trip to the monastery of Elmore, almost collided on the road with a huge upright creature. Roadie George Hollomon claimed to have attacked him while he was getting water from a well. When George told his older brother about the lizard man, he kept demanding that he shut up, Hollomon Jr., under the influence of shock, could not shut up. Two weeks after the lizardman's attack on Christopher Davis, the police managed to obtain casts of the monster's feet imprinted on the soil. The three-toed tracks reached 38 centimeters in length. Johnny Evans, the head of the Department of Water Resources of South Carolina, could not identify the mysterious creature from the tracks.

"Most likely," Evans explained, "it's either a mutant lizard or a creature that has not yet been encountered by modern science."

Radio station WCOS hastened to announce a million-dollar reward to the one who catches the lizard man alive, after which several hundred residents of Bishopville began to scour the swamps with shotguns.

Federal police officer Mike Hodge and Deputy Sheriff Wayne Atkinson managed to find three crushed containers of drinks with a volume of 150 liters in the vicinity of Scape-Or-Swamp. The trunks of young trees nearby were broken off at a height of two and a half meters. Nearby, on the hard red clay, Hodge found traces of huge paws measuring 35 by 40 centimeters.
