PITTSBURGH, December 9. UPI. - A flash of orange fire or "fireball" was seen in the sky today by airplane pilots and residents of six states and Canada.
Debris was reported falling in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Sources in the Pentagon indicated that, in their opinion, it was a meteorite. Dr. Paul Annier of Baldwin College in Berea, Ohio, said the object could have been a bolide, a meteor that disintegrates when it falls to earth.
An orange flash was seen in Windsor, Ontario, Michigan, Indiana, Northern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and New York, as well as in Northern West Virginia.
This evening, state police, the army and the Air Force gathered in a wooded mountainous area 30 miles south of here, where a woman reported seeing a round, smoldering object collapse to the ground.
Near Lapeer, Michigan, 40 miles north of Detroit, two small stacks of crushed foil were found in a swamp after the sheriff's department received reports that a fireball had fallen there.
