A few years ago, I went to Disneyland in Florida with my family. I was 17 years old, and it was me, my mom, my dad, my 12-year-old sister, and my 5-year-old brother. It was a hot summer day in late August 2006.
We'd been to Disneyland a few times and knew what to expect: long lines, horribly hot weather, and expensive merchandise, but hey, we were at Disneyland. So, we were waiting in line for an attraction called "Dinosaur in the Animal Kingdom". We had just stood at the end of a long queue and knew we would have to wait 15 to 20 minutes. In front of us, a man held his daughter's hand. They were unusually quiet. Very patient compared to the other families ahead.
We could hear the screams of excitement coming from the ride and the rides around us. The building of anticipation. I stand there, distracted by all the sights and sounds around us, catching a splash of warm water every second or so, almost in a daze.
Without warning, my brother lets out a blood-curdling scream. I've heard my brother scream before when he was throwing a tantrum when he was stung by a bee or something. This was different. It was a cry of absolute fear. I broke out of my frozen gaze and looked down to see my little brother staring straight ahead. He looked at the little girl who was holding her father's hand. I immediately understood what made him scream, it was the eyes of a little girl.
They met mine, and she smiled the meanest smile I've ever seen. But the smile wasn't the worst thing. They were her eyes. They were obsidian. A polished black color, and not just the iris, but the entire eyeball. Her dark eyes narrowed. She turned again and looked ahead. By this point, my parents were leaning over to examine my little brother and comfort him.
All eyes in the park were now looking at us, but my little brother's frightened expression didn't change. For a while, it remained that way. That's when the tears came. My mother advised us to return to our hotel room immediately. So we did. But before we parted, I looked back at my father and the little girl and nothing. Poof, they're gone.
I scanned the surrounding crowd, but they were nowhere to be seen. After the initial shock passed, questions followed. My family took turns asking him what was wrong. My little brother couldn't find the words to describe what he saw and felt that day, so I did it for him. But my parents responded with complete disbelief, as I knew they probably would. They just shrugged it off and decided to take my little brother to the doctor and check everything out.
It was only years later that he told my parents about his experience. He told them what he had seen. He described it as an alien demon. When asked how he knew what it was, he simply explained:
"Her eyes told me so."
Our shared experience prompted us to start the research. What we found both disturbed and comforted us. It was disappointing to learn that we weren't the only ones who'd seen those creepy black-eyed kids. It's disturbing to know how ordinary people report seeing them. These things have terrorized many people. I can't even call them children. I will never stop looking for answers.
