At the time of writing, newsrooms throughout the area were flooded with calls for concern about the unusual aerial spectacle seen in the vicinity of Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati.

One witness to the incident, a Cincinnati resident, told this reporter that shortly after 7:00 p.m., while traveling north on Interstate 75 from the entrance to In Florence, Kentucky, he and his wife noticed two "rows of lights" moving in formation. He said that this formation was "too wide for any aircraft".

He suspected it was a group of Air Force planes that flew low over the Greater Cincinnati region/Northern Kentucky.

The duration of the observation was from 30 to 45 seconds.

A witness reported that a group of lights on the" left side " separated and "moved away" from the larger formation. All the lights disappeared together, in the distance.

In response to this credible report of a large object or group of objects sighted in the vicinity of Florence, Kentucky, a call was made to the news department of Radio 700 WLW Cincinnati. The receptionist reported that hundreds of people had seen the sight, and within the last few minutes it had been called a " meteor."

The explanation, he said, was received from the airport (whose control tower, according to the motorist, should have had a clear and complete idea of the oddity), as well as from "scientists" whose names were not at his disposal.

The oddity was observed from Indianapolis, Indiana, to Paducah, Kentucky .

We will try to be on the lookout for any further information about this strange situation and keep you posted whenever possible.

The WLWT [NBC] Channel 5 news department was contacted, and a news department employee reported that their station received calls about an unusual observation in the sky around 7:00 p.m.

"We don't have a good explanation for what happened," he said. "At first we thought it was part of a meteor shower, but then we talked to an astronomer at the University of Cincinnati who told us he didn't think it was a meteor. He thinks it's part of an old satellite that fell out of orbit."

When asked how this information is received in the news department, he replied:

"People called from all over the state. Some callers reported that part of the facility had broken away from the main structure, and it looked like it was some kind of debris."

[Note: this is consistent with an earlier eyewitness interview]

A news staff member reported that people throughout the Greater Cincinnati area were calling 9-1-1 stations in each of their communities.

"The response to this is really sensational," he said. "We're going to launch this news at 11, in the first quarter."

I've been listening to News Radio 700 WLW for the last half hour, and this observation is all they talk about. On the Bill Cunningham program, his guest is Bill Boshiers, host of the Sci-Zone radio program. Boxers also noticed the oddity, and described a "flash" before the appearance of the object. He said the sighting was " creepy."

WKRC channel 12 [CBS] Meteorologist Tim Hedrick gave an extensive interview on the 9: 30 p.m. newscast and recounted his observation of what he initially assumed was a "burning plane." He also spoke about the greenish glow in the sky.

They take a lot of phone calls and widely support the theory that this sighting was caused by a UFO.

Needless to say, it's really interesting right now.

This evening, NUFORC received about 80-100 messages from many eastern states. We've been on the phone for almost 3 hours getting reports, and through our website we've received about 50 reports on today's events.

Reports come from the following states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, New York, Virginia, Georgia, and Washington, DC. Reports vary widely, from single, slow-moving fireballs to formations of a dozen or more objects that appear to be accurate.

In addition, we have received reports from two FAA facilities indicating that several flight crews have seen extremely bizarre objects and formations in the night sky.

As far as we know, most sightings occurred between 19: 00 and 19: 10 hours (EST), although about 90 minutes later, one sighting was reported from Georgia.

We don't yet know how these observations can be explained, but they don't seem to be consistent with either a meteor phenomenon or a re-entry event into space debris.

I have to run ... the phone is already ringing again.

This is probably the most dramatic event I have experienced in my five years at NUFORC. However, we do not yet know what caused these observations.

Meteorologist Tim Hedrick was again interviewed live on Radio 700 WLW and reported that his discovery occurred at 19: 03 or 19: 04.

The "object", as he described it, was moving from west to east and looked like some kind of plane, like a semi-trailer, from which a "green flame" was flying.

John Venture of the observatory reported that this is not a meteor from the Leonida stream.

Tim Hedrick reported that a television station in Lafayette, Ind., has a video of this, and his station, Channel 12 WKRC [CBS] in Cincinnati, will attempt to obtain this video from Lafayette for use on their newscast tonight at 11:00 p.m. They hope to get a signal via satellite.

Be that as it may, the meteor report took a strange turn with some additional information. Oh, boy, come on.

According to Bill Cunningham, who attended the show on 700 WLW, Hanover Fire Department officials told a Millville resident that Wright Patterson Air Force Base had detonated a rocket that was launched unintentionally. This was allegedly reported by radio to officials of the fire department of the town of Hanover.

Bill Cunningham then reported that the object first reported from Nebraska was supposed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the area.

It was somewhat curious, and for this information it was possible to "follow". A call was made to the Hanover Township Fire Department, on an off-line telephone line, and the station administrator checked the statements made by the caller on 700 WLW.

The person handling the call provided his name upon request, but his name will not be mentioned in this report for privacy reasons. He told how they were informed that the missile was accidentally launched and was destroyed [to some extent] by Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The officer said that he did not know the source of the story, but that it was " probably something heard on the radio, not on two-way communication."

He said it was "some kind of rumor", and when asked for more information, he either could not or would not specify the source of this information or the radio station/channel.

The officer did confirm that the caller to the 700 WLW number was accurate in his recollection of Hanover Township Fire Department officers openly discussing the theory that it was a rocket that was destroyed.

Today in the morning, I was looking at TV channel sites, and WKRC explains it as part of Leonid, or perhaps an unrelated meteor (see http://www.wkrc.com/story_202957.html)

The WLWT only has a link to NASA's Leonids pages, which also says that it is Leonids or another meteor (see

http://www.spacescience.com/newhome/headlines/ast17nov99_1.htm)

The time of this observation is so close to the beginning of Leonid that, without a doubt, it will remain an official explanation regardless of what the witnesses describe.

Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati Sightings

(Compiled reports)

Kenny Young

16th November 1999

As of the assembling of this note, newsrooms all across this area are being flooded with calls of concern regarding an unusual aerial spectacle seen in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati vicinity.

One witness to the incident, a resident of Cincinnati, informed this reporter that shortly after 7:00 p.m. while traveling northbound on Interstate 75 from the Florence, Kentucky entrance ramp, that he and his wife observed two “rows of lights” traveling in formation. This formation, he informed, was “way too wide to be any airplane.”

He suspected this to be an Air Force formation of jets that had flown low over the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region.

The duration of the sighting was between 30 to 45-seconds.

A group of lights on the “left portion” detached and ‘moved away’ from the larger formation, the witness informed. All the lights disappeared together, into the distance.

In response to this credible report of a large object or group of objects sighted in the Florence, Kentucky vicinity, a call was placed to the newsroom of 700 WLW radio [Cincinnati. The receptionist informed that hundreds of people had seen this spectacle, and within the last few minutes, it had been explained as a “meteor.”

The explanation, he informed, came from the airport [whose control tower, according to the motorist, would have had a clear, full view of the oddity] and also from “scientists,” whose names were not at his disposal.

The oddity was seen from Indianaopolis, Indiana to Paducah, Kentucky.

We’ll try to stay alert for any further information on this strange situation and keep you posted when able.

Needless to say, it’s really exciting around here right now.

NUFORC has received an estimated 80-100 reports numerous eastern states tonight. We have been on the telephone for almost 3 hours receiving reports, and we have received approximately 50 reports over our website regarding tonight’s events.

Reports have come in from the following states: WI, MI, OH, IN, IL, KY, TN, NY, WV, GA, and Washington, D.C.. The reports are widely variable, ranging from single, slow-moving fireballs, to formations of up to a dozen or more objects in seemingly precise formation.

In addition, we have received reports from two FAA facilities, indicating that multiple flight crews have seen extremely bizarre objects and formations in the night sky.

To the best of our knowledge, most of the sightings occurred between 1900 and 1910 hrs. (EST), although one sighting was reported from Georgia for approximately 90 minutes later.

We do not yet know what may explain these sightings, but they do not appear compatible with either a meteoritic event, or a space debris re-entry event.

I have to run…the phone is ringing again already.

This appears to be the most dramatic event I have handled in five years at NUFORC. However, we do not know yet what is causing the sightings.

For what its worth, the ‘meteor report’ has taken a strange turn with some additional information. Oh boy, whatever.

According to a caller to the Bill Cunningham show on 700 WLW, a Hanover Township fire department officials informed a resident of Millville that Wright Patterson AFB had detonated a missile which had been inadvertently launched. This was alleged to have been reported to Hanover Township Fire Department officials via their radio.

Bill Cunningam then informed that the object, first reported from Nebraska, would have to have been an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, being launched from that area.

This was somewhat curious, and was information which could be ‘followed- up’ on. A call was placed to the Hanover Township fire department, non- emergency telephone line, and the receptionist at the station verified the claims made by the caller to 700 WLW.

The person who handled the call gave his name upon request, but his name will not be referenced in this report for privacy concerns. He conveyed how they were informed that a missile was accidentally launched and was destroyed [in some capacity] by Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The officer informed that he was unaware of the source of this story, but that it was “Probably something heard over the radio, and not over two-way.”

He said that this was “some kind of rumor,” and when pressed for additional information, was either unable or unwilling to list a source for this information or a radio station/channel.

The officer did verify that the caller to 700 WLW was accurate in his recollection that Hanover Township fire department officials were openly discussing the theory that this was a missile which had been destroyed.

10:29 p.m. Kenny Young — UFO Research http://home.fuse.net/ufo/

Kenny,

I had a look this morning at the TV stations websites, and WKRC is explaining it as part of the Leonids or possibly an unrelated meteor.

http://www.wkrc.com/story_202957.html

WLWT only has a link to NASA’s Leonids pages, also saying it was the Leonids or an unrelated meteor.

http://www.spacescience.com/newhome/headlines/ast17nov99_1.htm

The timing of this sighting is just so close to the beginning of the Leonids, that it no doubt will remain the official explanation no matter what witnesses describe.

List of versions containing features matching the eyewitness descriptions or material evidence

Space debris

By space junk refers to all manmade objects and their fragments in space, which is already faulty, not functioning, and will never be able to serve any useful purpose. Currently in low earth orbits up to altitudes of about 2000 km is, according to various estimates, about 220 thousand (300 thousand according to the UN office for outer space Affairs, October 2009) man-made objects weighing up to 5000 tons.
In the case of UFOs, it is possible to expand this list lost cosmonauts things (tools, etc.).

Meteor

Meteor, "shooting star" is a phenomenon that occurs when small meteor bodies (for example, fragments of comets or asteroids) burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. A similar phenomenon of greater intensity (brighter than magnitude -4) it's called a fireball.
