Two Jefferson County police officers, described by their lieutenant as "solid guys," swear they had a two-minute UFO dogfight Friday night during a routine helicopter patrol.
Two officers on the ground said they also spotted the object. The UFO - a glowing pear-shaped object the size of a basketball - literally circled around the helicopter, although pilots say they were moving at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour.
According to all three officers, in one blinding moment, as both ships raced towards each other, the UFO released three baseball-sized fireballs from its middle. The fireballs turned to nothing.
Officers Kenny Graham and Kenny Downs have said little about their Friday night flight over the General Electric Appliance Park because they fear few people will believe them. But they are convinced that they did not have hallucinations.
"We both go to church every week," Downs said, to explain how normal they are. "In fact, I can start going to church twice a week."
Officer Mike Smith, who was downstairs in his patrol car, said he only saw the object for about a minute. But he confirmed that the UFO shot three fireballs into the air and then disappeared. Officer Joe Smolenski said he spent more than a minute trying to catch up with the object in his patrol car.
"I've been looking for them for 14 years, and I think it's the best thing I've come up with that I couldn't explain."
Lieutenant David Pope, who was woken at 12:30 on Saturday morning by a call from the startled officers, confirmed their sanity and sincerity.
"These guys are absolutely solid guys," Pope said. "I have no doubt that something was there."
The night began like any other night. Graham and Downs got to work around 18: 00 and were soon in the air, performing routine patrols. The pilot was 39-year-old Graham, who worked for 11 years. Downs, 39, was a spotter with a five-year veteran.
While in the air, they received a call about a possible break-in near Sanford Avenue and Buchel Bank Road. They flew away and quickly reached the area, which is near the northeast corner of the Instrument Park, at about 23: 50.
As they circled, Graham saw what looked like a small fire to his left. That night, revellers enjoying the new snowfall lit dozens of bonfires in the area.
But soon Graham decided that I was! not fire. Downs pointed his 1.3 million-candle spotlight at the object, which began to drift back and forth like a balloon as the light washed over it. It then gradually rose to a height of about 500 feet above the ground where the helicopter was located, and hovered for a few seconds.
"Then it took off at a speed I've never seen before," Graham said: an experienced pilot.
The object made two huge counter-clockwise loops and finally approached the rear of the helicopter.
Graham was afraid that the object would ram his tail rotor, accelerating his speed to 100 miles per hour. The UFO flew past them and instantly rose hundreds of feet into the air. He descended again and approached the helicopter. Graham tried to close the gap with the object, and it flew away again. As the UFO approached on a parallel course, three fireballs burst from its core.
Startled, Graham swerved away from the object.
"When we got back, he was gone," Graham said.
When the two men returned to their base, Graham called the control room at Standiford Field to ask if their radar had detected anything unusual. Did not have.
Downes radioed county dispatchers to see if anyone had reported his sightings. No one had.
But the two did get confirmation from two officers on the ground, one of whom was Smith.
"I have no idea what it was," Smith said, but his confirmation delighted the two airmen.
"It makes me feel better," Downs said, " what to eat ... grown men who are sworn to protect this community and have seen the same thing."

Two officers on the ground said they, too, spotted the object. The UFO — a glowing pear-shaped object about the size of a basketball — literally flew circles around the helicopter, even though the fliers say they were moving at speeds approaching 100 mph.
In one blinding moment when both craft were hurtling toward each other, the UFO shot three baseball-size fireballs out of its middle, all three officers said. The fireballs fizzled into nothing. Officers Kenny Graham and Kenny Downs haven’t talked much about their Friday night flight over General Electric Appliance Park because they fear few will believe them. But they are convinced they weren’t hallucinating.

“I have no idea what it was,” Smith said, but his confirmation cheered the two fliers.
“It makes me feel better,” Downs said, “that there are… grown men out there who are sworn to protect this community and who saw the same thing.”
