En la noche del 13 de abril, un residente de Sudbury (HW) que trabajaba en una empresa de reparación y un colega suyo en su camino a Hanmer vieron un espectáculo extraño. Eran alrededor de las 21:45 cuando se acercaron a la cima de la colina en Val Caron, desde donde se abrían hermosas vistas del valle. En ese momento, vieron una bola azul en forma de bola con una cola en llamas moviéndose a través del cielo.
Al principio pensaron que era un meteoro, pero la cola de fuego se apagó repentinamente y el objeto se encendió tres veces antes de desaparecer. Un testigo dijo que "el objeto voló demasiado rápido para ser un avión y, sin embargo, demasiado lento para ser un meteorito o una estrella fugaz".
También dijo que dejó un rastro de humo detrás de él, lo que significaba que estaba en la atmósfera. Dijo:

On the evening of April 13th, a Sudbury resident (HW) who works for a maintenance company and a fellow worker saw a strange sight while on their way to Hanmer. The time was approximately 9:45 p.m. when they approached the top of the hill in Val Caron from which there is an excellent view of the valley. At that moment, they saw a blue, ball-shaped light with a flaming tail on it moving across the sky. At first, they thought it was a meteor, but the fire tail suddenly went out and the object flashed brightly three times before disappearing. The witness said that the 'object was going too fast to be a plane, and yet too slow to be a meteor or shooting star.' He also said that it left a trail of smoke behind, which meant that it was in the atmosphere. He said: 'It was very close to the ground, maybe a couple of hundred feet up. Three cars in front of us seen it also and slammed on the breaks.' They reported their sighting to the airport and a local radio station, but they hadn't seen or heard anything about it.
