At the end of 1985, returning from a business trip to Ulaanbaatar, my traveling companion turned out to be an ensign technician servicing aircraft at one of the airfields. He started telling me a story that literally shook their military town the other day. The pilot was performing a task in the air, he visually saw an object near the aircraft resembling an oblong, flattened body on the sides of which the portholes shone (the flight occurred at night). He requested permission to make a training attack. Having received a positive response, he began to perform a combat turn. At that moment, the flying body with incredible speed moved parallel to the ground behind the hills. This conversation stirred up in my memory an incident that I witnessed.

In 1975, after graduating from the Leningrad Higher Military-political School of Air Defense, he arrived for service in the Trans-Baikal Military District. He became the deputy head of the "air defense point" in the Chita region. On the state border with China. In the summer of 1976, everything was as usual. Some of the personnel were on combat duty on the outskirts of the state border of the USSR, others were resting. Suddenly, the duty officer informed me that the patrolman had visually observed an aircraft from China, or rather something "incomprehensible" in the air. The same information was received by the border outpost. I ran out into the street with the soldiers. the night (something around 22-00 local time) was bright. In general, the stars seem brighter in Zabaikalsk, you can see a falling meteorite. The Milky Way seems quite close by. Against the background of the hills from China hung something incomprehensible. Of course, right now I can't convey exactly everything. But I still remember the most important thing very vividly.

The object was an oblong flattened body, on the sides, or rather on one side, which was facing us, the portholes were shining. The object is slowly moving, then in one direction, then in the other. I was hanging in one place. from somewhere at the bottom, three searchlight beams were vertically downwards. The drawing I sketched you is, of course, primitive. Of course, you understand that we, the military people guarding the state border of the USSR, are not up to contemplation. I gave the command to turn on the radar stations available at the "point. I sent officers to the radar station when they were ready. But our attempts to serve the "target", and for us it was precisely the target, the likely enemy, did not lead to anything. we didn't see anything on the radar screens, the airspace was empty. although there were three radar stations that, according to their characteristics, are able to detect the aircraft, exactly where it is located.

I reported about the object to the higher KP. Other "dots" radars were connected. But our neighbors didn't observe anything either.

And we, soldiers, officers, stood on our hill and gazed enchanted into the sky. The aircraft was still hanging in the sky. He switched on and off his searchlights, moving along the horizon. It was difficult to determine the distance to him "by eye". It seemed to us that he was nearby.

The object hung in the sky for about 3 hours. Then everything suddenly went out and disappeared. the next day, we started getting calls from the district center and a number of comrades asked what was being launched there and what was flying. They also observed this phenomenon.

That's actually all I wanted to tell you about. As an air defense officer dealing with radar technology, knowing all types of aircraft, including the likely enemy. I can firmly say that what we observed was not some kind of mass hallucination. It was an objective reality. The phenomenon is not yet clear to us. Our equipment is not yet able to detect this object and fix it on film.

Then I often thought and recalled this phenomenon. To say about it, and even more so to write about it would be ridiculous. and to be honest, it was not up to that. Life set its own tasks.
