25 years ago on this day, Frederick Valentich disappeared over the Bass Strait under very strange circumstances. This is a mystery that has not yet been solved.
The extraordinary disappearance of pilot Frederick Valentich over bass Strait on October 21, 1978, drew attention to the subject of UFOs in news headlines around the world. The mystery of the Spot has remained an unsolved mystery.
The crux of the mystery is what happened to the young pilot and his light aircraft 182 Cessna-VH-DSJ (Delta Sierra Juliet) - that October evening. The circumstances of the complete disappearance of the pilot and the plane have since been elevated to one of the main mysteries of aviation and, for many, to one of the most intriguing elements of the UFO phenomenon.
The fact that the mystery lasted so long is a direct result of the incredible aspects at the heart of the case. Twenty-year-old Frederick Valentich, who made a 47-minute flight from Moorabbin (Victoria) to king island in 47 minutes was supposed to be a normal 69-minute flight, said in a radio conversation with the dispatcher of the flight service of Melbourne, Steve Roby, that he saw an unidentified " plane» beside him.
The only official report on this case was the Summary report of the accident investigation, number V116 / 783/1047. The main relevant events and the transcript of the conversation between Valentich and Robi - "strange type radio meeting" - are included in the report given here.
On may 11, 1978, the pilot received an instrument rating of fourth class, and was therefore allowed to operate at night in visual weather conditions (VMC). On the afternoon of 21 October 1978, he visited the Moorabbin information office, received a weather briefing, and at 5.23 PM submitted a flight plan for the VMC's night flight from Moorabbin to king island and back. The cruising altitude stated in the flight plan was below 5,000 feet, with estimated time intervals of 41 minutes to Cape Otway and 28 minutes from Cape Otway to king island. The total fuel reserve was 300 minutes. The pilot did not take any steps to turn on the airfield lights for his arrival on king island.
The plane was fully refueled at 18: 10 and took off from Moorabbin at 18: 19. After departure, the pilot established a two-way radio link with the Melbourne aviation branch (FSU).
Valentich reported in this broadcast that a "large plane" appeared under him and then apparently flew over his plane. He felt that it was an "unknown plane", especially because of its apparent speed. It was approaching from the East and seemed to be "playing a game", "flying over me two or three times at a speed I could not determine".
Frederick Valentich emphasized:
"It's not a plane... it's flying past, it's a long form."
Then he described:
"It seems to be stationary. What I'm doing right now is orbiting and this thing is just orbiting above me, also it has a green light and something like metallic (like) it's all glistening (on the outside)»
A minute later, Valentich said the object was approaching his plane from the southwest. Then the Cessna engine started idling. Frederick Valentich's last broadcast was:
"... that strange aircraft is hovering on top of me. It's floating, and it's not a plane ."
17 seconds of an open microphone, followed by metallic sounds similar to the rapid tapping of an airplane microphone, and then silence.
Intensive air, sea, and ground searches followed over the next 4 days. No trace of the pilot or plane was found.
The weather around Cape Otway was clear, with traces of stratified Cumulus clouds at 5,000-7,000 feet, scattered Cirrus clouds at 30,000 feet, excellent visibility, and light winds. The end of daylight on Cape Otway was at 19 hours and 18 minutes.
The search and rescue alert phase was declared at 19: 12, and at 19:33, when the plane did not arrive at king island, the disaster phase was declared and search operations were initiated. Intensive air, sea, and land searches continued until October 25, 1978, but no trace of the plane was found.
The official report also mentions the following points:

- Conclusion regarding the cause ("Accident»): The reason for the disappearance of the aircraft has not been established.
Steve Roby, an FSU or Flight Service Unit radio controller who spoke to valentich during the 6 minutes leading up to His disappearance, said in an interview with the Melbourne Herald:
"I think at first he was a bit concerned about this other plane flying around him, and of course I had to assume it was a different plane until it evolved and became a bit mysterious. Towards the end, I think he was definitely worried about his safety. I thought he had to be a good actor to put everything together the way he did."
Robie couldn't believe he was talking to a disoriented pilot:
"It's like he was looking for this thing when he was talking on the radio... a young man with little experience. It was getting dark, and the visual landmarks on the ground were fading. In this situation, if it happened, it is clear that he is a little nervous.
It was a kind of hasty communication... like he was startled... he was definitely concerned... it sounded like it confused him."
Apart from a very early attempt to suggest that Frederick Valentich may have been flying upside down, completely disoriented, with beacon lights producing his perception of an "unidentified aircraft", the Australian Department of aviation has never formally considered what Valentich observed prior to his disappearance.
First, the assistant Secretary of state (flight safety investigation), Mr. G. W. Hughes, told the author of this article that he did not understand what was meant by my expression: "... the incentive of the apparent UFO sighting by Valentich ...»
"However, much attention was paid to what Mr. Valentich could look at when describing his observations. A significant number of proposals were put forward by people inside and outside this Department. All were examined. The Department is not aware of any other official body conducting such an investigation into this incident, " Hughes wrote.
However, when it came to the official investigation of a possible connection with UFOs, there was a real bureaucratic "Catch-22".
Hughes advised me:
"As you correctly stated..., the RAAF is responsible for investigating reports of UFO sightings, and communication has been established with the RAAF on these aspects of the investigation. The decision on whether to investigate the UFO report remains with the RAAF, not with this Department."
Then the author of the article writes the following:
At that time, I was fortunately able to get a better understanding of the RAAF's role in the Valentich case. I was granted unprecedented direct access to RAAF files. During my detailed examination of the files during several visits to the Ministry of defence in Canberra, I found no documentation of the Valentich case.
The RAAF - DAFI intelligence liaison officer told me that the RAAF did not investigate the case because they were not asked to by the air Department! The RAAF considered this more appropriate in the area of "accident / safety" investigations. The intelligence officer also said that, in his personal opinion, the reason was disorientation of the pilot.
In November 1982, I was finally given official permission to study the Department of aviation's UFO files, but I was specifically denied access to Valentich's files on the grounds that they were accident investigation files, not UFO files.
Hughes from flight safety explained:
"The file relating to this incident is no more or less restricted than any other accident investigation file. As a signatory state to the International Convention on civil aviation, we subscribe to the Standards and Recommended practices contained in Annex 13 to the Convention regarding accident investigation, in particular when it is considered that disclosure of records for purposes other than accident prevention may adversely affect the availability of information in this or any future investigation, such records are considered confidential."
While in Melbourne, studying the UFO files Of the Department of aviation, I had the opportunity to discuss the Valentich case at length with Mr. A. Woodward, who signed the official summary report of the aviation accident investigation of may 27, 1982. He basically repeated in the official line of the Department, emphasizing that they consider this issue as an investigation only of an "aviation accident".
He settled on a long list of prosaic explanations, ranging from diorientation, suicide, and the unlikely prospect of a plane crashing into a meteorite, but admitted that the case was still unresolved.
Dr. Richard Haynes was a NASA scientist and accident researcher, as well as an active UFO researcher, especially in cases involving pilot witnesses.
He took a special interest in the incident with Valentich. He was granted access to the recording of the incident and began to study it. He was not able to definitively identify the unusual sounds that appeared in the last 17 seconds of the open microphone connection with Valentich. A metallic sound is noticeable. Dr. Haynes found that they were similar to the sound made by pressing a microphone quickly, but control tests did not fully confirm this.
He published a book based on his study of the MELBOURNE EPISODE – Case study of a missing pilot.
It included 4 hypothetical stories about what might have happened, namely: "disorientation / crash / death of the pilot", "Deliberate deception of the pilot", "actual abduction of a UFO in flight" and"test of a military weapon".
While Dr. Haynes seems to have supported the latter "hypothesis," in reality the evidence for it is insignificant and speculative.
Many people reported seeing UFOs on the same day and night of Valentich's disappearance. Some of these reports are difficult to reconcile with the hysteria and publicity that quickly escalated around the case, raising it to an international sensation.
About 15 or more explicit sightings survived the trials of civilian groups. All of them occurred between noon and October 21. Six occurred in Victoria, one on king island, and the rest in New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia. These reports seemed to confirm that something very unusual had happened abroad on that unusual day.
A strange series of photos taken over Bass Strait by Roy Manifold, a plumber on vacation in Crayfish Bay, near Apollo Bay, just 20 minutes before Valentich began describing his encounter, revealed something unusual.
He took 6 photos of the setting sun. He did not see anything wrong, the camera was set to automatically shoot a series of photos, but after processing the fourth and sixth photos revealed obvious anomalies. The fourth photo shows something like a dense "black lump" in the water, giving the impression that something is rising out of the water. The fifth photo was normal. The sixth shows a strange mass located in the sky directly above the position of the anomaly in the fourth photo, which looked like an object caught in flight with a possible exhaust or trace of material.
Film defects and processing defects are excluded. The RAAF assumed that the Cumulus cloud was breaking up, but the exposure time required the "cloud" to move into view at up to 200 mph. What a cloud for what was a quiet day!
The areas that feature prominently in the Valentich incident-Cape Otway (its last landfall), bass Strait (its obvious place of disappearance), and king island (its obvious destination) - all have extensive precedents for UFO activity.
During a two-month period centered around January 1978, campers, fishermen, school teachers, local police, and lighthouse keepers in the Cape Otway area reported seeing UFOs. In July 1977, local residents and the lighthouse Keeper at Cape Otway saw an inexplicable bright light source that hovered in the sea for half an hour.
In our history, we have seen that Bass Strait featured in UFO mysteries, especially in 1920 and 1944. The Melbourne Argus newspaper even described many people who saw "cigar" objects flying over Bass Strait as early as 1896.
A wave of unidentified nighttime aerial lights was observed on king island, a 425-square-mile area, at least three months before Frederick Valentich disappeared. Oval-shaped lights followed the cars and puzzled the locals. Strange lights or flashes appeared in the North of the island. One of the most spectacular UFO encounters in the area occurred in a wild and uninhabited part of the coast of king island, near Cape Whistler, shortly before dawn on April 10, 1976. The "beam of light " coming from the" cross-shaped object " approached the shooter's car in a straight line. The indicator light eventually retreated right along the approach line, ending the silent inspection as it disappeared over the distant horizon line.
Many things point to a UFO connection, but unfortunately the final answer eludes us, which makes us unsure. Despite the provocative nature of Valentich's taped conversation with a Melbourne air traffic controller prior to his disappearance, which talks about the possible presence of UFOs, this novel still remains a mystery.
Valentich's mystery is interspersed with haunting, or rather tantalizing, clues that send the man in all sorts of contradictory directions. Many have come up with all sorts of final solutions, from the most bizarre to the grandiose. Valentich was kidnapped by a UFO? Valentich started all this? Did it, as many thought, crash into Bass Strait without leaving a trace? Or are there other prosaic explanations?
Many different lines of research diverge in all possible directions. Most of them lead us away from the point, which is that no trace of the pilot or the plane has yet been found. The mystery resonates in the minds of Australians in a place reserved for more mythic episodes, such as the haunting fiction "picnic at Hanging rock". He has inspired dramatic works such as the deep and controversial play "sky" and the quirky and vivid TV mini-series "Locusts and wild honey". We need to remind ourselves that the family is waiting for an answer that never came. I hope that someday they will find this answer.
Unfortunately, Guido Valentich, frédéric's father, has recently died. He maintained regular annual vigils, hoping for confidence in his son's fate.
I spoke to Steve Roby in 1999. He pointed out to me that he still considered the disappearance of Frederick Valentich a mystery. Robie told me:
"I don't think he was disoriented. I don't believe he faked or committed suicide. It sounded energized and very sincere ... He was definitely concerned about what he was looking at."
He feels that there is some connection to UFOs, and he believes that officials are keeping the subject of UFOs a secret.
"I'm leaning toward a UFO connection."
He shared with me his knowledge of other UFO sightings, including those he learned about in his role as a flight controller.
It's really a shame that this mystery hasn't been solved, especially for the Valentich family. If someone has information that can help solve the mystery, please respond.

The Valentich mystery has endured as an insoluble enigma. The crux of the mystery is just what happened to the young pilot and his 182 Cessna light aircraft – VH – DSJ (Delta Sierra Juliet) – during that October evening. The circumstances behind the total disappearance of both pilot and plane have since been elevated into one of the premier mysteries of aviation and for many one of the most intriguing elements of the UFO phenomenon.

The pilot obtained a class Four instrument rating on 11 May 1978 and he was therefore authorised to operate at night in visual meteorological conditions (VMC). Valentich reported in this transmission that “a large aircraft” appeared below him, then apparently passed over his aircraft. He felt it was an “unknown aircraft” particularly because of its apparent speed. It approached him from the east and seemed to be “playing some sort of game”, “flying over me two three times at speeds I could not identify”. Frederick Valentich emphasised, “It’s not an aircraft … it’s flying past, it’s a long shape.” Then he described, “it seems like its stationary.

The weather in the Cape Otway area was clear with a trace of stratocumulus cloud at 5000 to 7000 feet, scattered cirrus cloud at 30000 feet, excellent visibility and light winds. The end of daylight at Cape Otway was at 1918 hours.
The Alert Phase of SAR procedures was declared at 1912 hours and, at 1933 hours when the aircraft did not arrive at King Island, the Distress Phase was declared and search action was commenced. An intensive air, sea and land search was continued until 25 October 1978, but no trace of the aircraft was found.

Steve Robey, the FSU or Flight Service Unit radio controller, who spoke with Valentich during those 6 minutes leading up to his disappearance, said in a Melbourne Herald interview:
“I think at first he was a little concerned about this other aircraft flying around him, and of course I had to assume that it was another aircraft until it developed and became a little mysterious. Towards the end I think he was definitely concerned for his safety; I considered that he would have had to have been a good actor to have put it all together the way he did.”
Robey did not believe he had talked to a disorientated pilot,
“It was as though he was looking around for this thing as he was speaking on the radio … a young fellow with little experience; it was getting dark, and visual reference to the ground is fading. In a situation like this, if this is what happened, it is understandable he is getting a little bit uptight.
“It was a kind of rushed communication … it was as if he was startled… he was definitely concerned … it sounded as though it was rattling him.”
Apart from a very early attempt to suggest that Frederick Valentich may have been flying upside down, totally disorientated, with lighthouse lights producing his perception of an “unidentified aircraft”, the Australian Department of Aviation has never officially addressed the question of what Valentich may have been observing prior to his disappearance.
I tried to extract from the Department their opinion.
At first the then Assistant Secretary (Air Safety Investigation), Mr. G.V. Hughes, advised me that he was not clear as to what was meant by my expression, “…the stimulus of Valentich’s apparent UFO observation…”
“However, a great deal of consideration has been given to what Mr. Valentich might have been looking at when he described his observations. A considerable number of suggestions have been put forward by persons inside and outside this Department. All have been examined. The Department is not aware of any other official body having undertaken such an investigation into this occurrence,” Mr. Hughes wrote.
However, when it came to an official investigation of a possible UFO connection, a veritable bureaucratic “Catch-22” loomed large. Mr. Hughes advised me, “As you correctly state …, the RAAF is responsible for the investigation of reports concerning ‘UFO’ sightings, and liaison was established with the RAAF on these aspects of the investigation. The decision as to whether or not the ‘UFO’ report is to be investigated rests with the RAAF and not with this Department.”
At the time I was fortunately in a position to get a clearer picture of the RAAF role in the Valentich case. I had been given unprecedented direct access to the RAAF files. During my detailed explorations of the files in a number of visits to the Department of Defence in Canberra, I did not come across any documentation on the Valentich affair. The RAAF Intelligence Liaison Officer – DAFI told me that the RAAF did not investigate the affair because they were not asked to by the Department of Aviation! The RAAF saw it as more appropriately in the domain of an “air accident/air safety” enquiry. The Intelligence officer also volunteered that his personal opinion was that pilot disorientation was involved.
In November, 1982, I was finally given official permission to examine the Department of Aviation UFO files, but was specifically denied access to the Valentich files on the grounds that they were Air Accident Investigation files and not UFO files. Mr. Hughes of Air Safety elaborated,
“The file concerning this occurrence is no more or less restricted than any other accident investigation file. As a signatory to the International Convention on Civil Aviation, we subscribe to the Standards and Recommended Practices contained in Annex 13 to the Convention, in respect of aircraft accident investigation, specifically, when it is considered that the disclosure of records, for the purposes other than accident prevention, might have an adverse effect on the availability of information in that or any future investigation, such records are considered privileged.”
While in Melbourne examining the Aviation Department’s UFO files, I was able to have a lengthy discussion on the Valentich affair with Mr. A. Woodward, the signatory on the official Aircraft Accident Investigation Summary Report, dated May 27th, 1982. He largely reiterated the official department line, emphasising that they were treating the matter as only an “air accident” investigation. He dwelt on a long list of prosaic explanations ranging from diorientation, suicide, to the unlikely prospect of the plane being struck by a meteorite, but conceded that the affair was still unresolved.

There is much that suggests a UFO connection but unfortunately a final answer eludes us, preventing the comfort of certainty. Despite the provocative nature of the taped conversation Valentich had with Melbourne Flight Control prior to his disappearance that refers to a possible UFO presence, the affair still remains a mystery.
The Valentich mystery is punctuated with haunting, or rather more appropriately, taunting clues, that sets one off in all sorts of conflicting directions. Many have come up with all sorts of final solutions, that vary from the bizarre to the sublime. Did a UFO abduct Valentich? Did Valentich contrive the whole affair? Did he, as many think, crash into Bass Strait, leaving no trace? Or are other prosaic explanations involved?
A multitude of various lines of enquiry radiate out in all sorts of directions. Most take us away from the facts of the matter, namely that no trace of pilot or plane have yet been found. The mystery resonates in the Australian consciousness in a place reserved for more mythic episodes like the haunting fiction of “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. It has inspired dramatic works like the profound and confronting play “Sky” and the bizarre and striking TV mini-series, “Locusts and Wild Honey”. We must remind ourselves that a family waits for an answer that so far has never come. I hope that some day they will find that answer.
Sadly Guido Valentich s, Frederick s father, passed away recently. He maintained a regular annual vigil hoping for a sense of certainty about the fate of his son. I spoke to Steve Robey in 1999. He indicated to me that he still feels the disappearance of Frederick Valentich is a mystery. Robey told me, “I don’t believe he was disorientated. I don’t believe he faked it or committed suicide. He sounded under stress and sounded very genuine… He was definitely concerned about what he was looking at.” He feels there is some sort of UFO connection and he feels that officials are keeping the UFO subject under wraps. “I lean towards a UFO connection.” He shared with me his knowledge of other UFO sightings, including ones he became aware of in his flight controller role.
It is indeed frustrating that this mystery has not been resolved, particularly for the Valentich family. If someone out there has information that can assist in settling the mystery please come forward.

Pilot reports UFO, then vanishes
MELBOURNE (UPI) - "It isn't an aircraft. It's . . ."
Moments after pilot Frederick Valentich told an Australian control tower an unidentified flying object with four green lights was chasing him, radio transmission was cut off, and nothing more was heard from the 20-year-old pilot or his single-engine Cessna 182.
A full-scale search by the Australian air force resumed today for the plane - and its lone occupant - whose last known position was over the Bass Strait, 130 miles (208 kilometres) south of Melbourne.
Transport department spokesman Kenneth Williams said Valentich radioed Melbourne Flight Service Control Saturday at 7.06 p.m. and reported a UFO was following him at 4,500 feet.
He described his pursuer as "a green light and sort of metallic light on the outside."
Ground control said there was no air traffic in the area below 5,000 feet.
Valentich disagreed.
"It has four bright lights - appear to be landing lights. Aircraft has just passed over me about 1,000 feet above."
"Can you identify the aircraft," control asked.
"It isn't an aircraft. It's . . ." Then silence.
Two minutes later, Valentich's voice rasped over the radio again.
"Melbourne, it's approaching from due east toward me . . . It seems to be playing some sort of game . . . Flying at a speed I cannot estimate . . . It is flying past . . . It is a long shape . . . Cannot identify more than that . . . coming for me right now . . . It seems to be stationary . . . I'm orbiting (circling) and the thing is orbiting on top of me also . . . It has a green light and sort of metallic light on the outside."
Suddenly, Valentich reported his engine was choking.
Metallic scratching replaced the pilot's voice. Then there was no sound at all.
When the aircraft did not arrive at King Island on schedule, investigators began an air search, but found no sign of the aircraft.
