Australians investigate the pilot's message about UFOs
MELBOURNE (AP) - Australian authorities were trying to determine yesterday whether an oil slick found in the sea south of here came from a light plane that disappeared after its young pilot radioed that a large object hovering above it was not an airplane.
Frederick Valentich (20 years old), was flying on a short solo flight from Melbourne to King Island via Bass Strait when he disappeared on Saturday evening.
Air traffic controllers on the mainland reported that he reported on the radio at 19: 06 that he saw four bright lights at an altitude of about 1000 feet above him, which, apparently, were the landing lights of a large plane. He asked if there were any military aircraft in the area, and was told that there were none.
Two minutes later, at 7:08, he reported on the radio:
"He is approaching me from the east. He seems to be playing some kind of game ... It's flying at a speed that I can't estimate."
At 7: 09, he reported on the radio:
"This is not a plane. This is ... " and the radio connection was briefly lost.
He was asked to identify the object.
"He's flying by. This is a long form. I can't identify any more. It's coming for me right now, " he said. At 7: 10, he said, " It seems that he is motionless. I'm orbiting, and this thing is also orbiting above me. It has a green light and something like a metal light outside."
A few minutes later, he reported that the engine of his plane was roughly idling and coughing.
His last words before the final loss of radio communication were:
"It's not a plane."
According to air traffic controllers, they heard a noise on the radio.

Australians probing pilot's report of UFO
MELBOURNE (AP) - Australian authorities were trying to determine yesterday whether an oil slick spotted in the sea south of here came from a light plane that vanished after its young pilot radioed that a large object hovering above him was not an aircraft.
Frederick Valentich, 20, was on a short solo flight from Melbourne to King Island across the Bass Strait when he disappeared Saturday evening.
Air traffic controllers on the mainland reported he radioed at 7:06 p.m. that he could see four bright lights about 1,000 feet above him that appeared to be the landing lights of a large aircraft. He asked whether any military aircraft were in the area and was told there were not.
Two minutes later, at 7:08, he radioed: "It is approaching from due east toward me. It seems to be playing some sort of game. . . flying at a speed I cannot estimate."
At 7:09 he radioed: "It is not an aircraft. It's. . ." and radio contact was lost briefly. He was asked to identify the object.
"It is flying past. It is a long shape. I cannot identify more than that. It's coming for me right now," he said. At 7:10 he said: "It seems to be stationary. I'm orbiting and the thing is orbiting on top of me also. It has a green light and a sort of metallic light on the outside."
A few minutes later he reported that his plane's engine was idling roughly and coughing.
His last words before radio contact was lost permanently were: "It is not an aircraft."
Air traffic controllers reported they then heard a noise on the radio.
