This very unusual event happened to MS Andrea Richards, a homemaker, aged thirty-four, and her daughters Janine, aged eight, and Kathleen, aged five, as they were driving home in Marche near St Helens.

In terms of weather, it was a light drizzle on a dark night. They were all very tired, and she had a radio and a good reception when there was a lot of interference. Ahead, she saw the sky light up.

When crossing the bridge, the car lost power and stopped. The entire electrical system was turned off, even the dashboard lights. The attempt to restart the machine failed.

Then "a deafening vibrating noise engulfed the car." When she and the children covered their ears, "painful electric shocks began to run through their bodies." This went on for about a minute. The car was filled with a "suffocating smell" and they evacuated.

They ran down the road to a house some distance away, where a local resident noted their anxious state, received them, and after they had settled down a little, returned them to the car. The lights went out, and all that was unusual about the car was that its "hood" was hot. The car started normally and they drove home.

Coincidentally, the lady's husband was waiting for the rest of the family, saw lights in the sky, and heard a distant roar. He and the local garage checked the car and everything was fine.

Although the children did not suffer any side effects, the next day the mother's hands and fingers were swollen, as well as numbness on the right side of her face [with an indescribable "red mark").

Two days later, the husband noticed a high-beam light that he thought was following his car. When they got home, the family looked for light. Above the trees, about 150 meters away, they saw a floating yellow light in the form of an "inverted banana".

They turned off the lights in their house and the subject left.

Summary:   This very unusual event occurred to Mrs Andrea Richards, housewife, thirty four, and her daughters Janine (eight) and Kathleen (five) when they were travelling home to The Marches near St Helens.  Weatherwise it was a light drizzling rain, on a dark night. They were all very tired and She had the radio on and was having good reception, when it developed a great deal of static. Ahead she saw the sky light up. Crossing a bridge, the car then lost power and rolled to a stop. The whole electric system was out, even the dashboard lights. An attempt to restart the car failed. Then, “a deafening vibrating noise enveloped the car.” As she and the children covered their ears, “painful electrical shocks began penetrating their bodies.” This went on for about a minute. The car filled with a “choking smell”, and they evacuated. They ran down the road to a house some distance away, where the resident noted their alarmed condition, took them in, and after they had settled a bit took them back to their vehicle. The light was gone, and all that was unusual with the car was that its “bonnet” was hot. The car started normally, and they went home. Coincidentally, the lady’s husband was out waiting for the rest of the family, and saw lights in the sky and heard a distant roar. He and the local garage checked the car and nothing was amiss. Although the children suffered no ill effects, the mother had swollen arms and fingers the next day, and a numbness in the right side of her face [with an undescribed “red mark” there as well]. Two nights later, the husband noticed a distant light which he felt was following his car. Upon arriving home, the family looked for the light. Above some trees, about 150 meters away, they saw an “inverted banana-shaped” yellow light hovering. They turned off their house lights and the object moved away.
